At St. Luke’s Episcopal School, our Middle School House System brings students together across grades, builds leadership skills, and adds a healthy dose of friendly competition to the middle school experience. Designed to foster teamwork, school spirit, and lasting friendships, the system gives every student a place to belong and thrive.
How It Works

Middle school students are sorted into four houses—Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks, Great White Sharks, and Hammerhead Sharks—each with its own color and faculty sponsors. Students are assigned their house through a fun and memorable sorting ceremony, where each student discovers their team in a celebratory, pep rally-style event.
Once assigned, houses meet weekly before chapel to collaborate, plan strategies for challenges, and strengthen connections across grades. Each house elects a student leader, or prefect, who guides meetings, encourages participation, and helps organize activities throughout the year.
Friendly Competition and Collaboration
Throughout the year, houses compete in a variety of challenges and contests. These include:
Food drive competitions to benefit local charities
Christmas cupcake design contests to celebrate creativity
STEAM challenges that engage students in science, technology, engineering, art, and math
Students can also earn points for acts of kindness, leadership, or outstanding effort, ensuring that character and community involvement are just as important as competition.
Why the House System Matters
The Shark House System is more than just games and points—it’s a way to develop leadership, teamwork, and school pride. Students form meaningful connections with peers from different grades, practice problem-solving, and build confidence in a supportive environment. Whether competing in a STEAM challenge, designing cupcakes, or leading a food drive, every student has the opportunity to shine.
For families seeking an Episcopal middle school or private school in Baton Rouge, the House System is a prime example of how St. Luke’s nurtures student engagement, character development, and community while making middle school fun and memorable.
