Since 1957, St. Luke's Episcopal Day School has helped instill in each student the values that form the very foundation for a responsible and successful life. The early school years set the stage for a child's life-long love of learning. Attention, recognition and encouragement of each child's special gifts and needs allows them to flourish. At St. Luke's, no child blends into the crowd, and no child struggles alone.
St. Luke's Episcopal Day School has been recognized as one of the finest schools in Baton Rouge. The reasons become clear the minute you arrive on campus. Our busy campus, with its graceful mixture of old and new buildings and beautiful treas and flowers, provides the ideal setting for learning and discovery. The atmosphere at St. Luke's is warm and friendly because we believe when students feel secure and accepted, there is no limit to what they can achieve.
St. Luke's Episcopal Day School includes each student, teacher, staff and parent as valued members of our extended family. Our rich tradition builds a healthy community encouraging responsibility, cooperation, respect, commitment, stewardship and faith. This is our testament in time and our vision for the future.
Children quickly discover there are unlimited opportunities to grow intellectually, emotionally socially and physically at St. Luke's Episcopal Day School. As a child moves through the grades we strive to keep learning fun and challenging. Our goal is to prepare our students to succeed in any academic environment when they've moved on to high school.
Visitors to our campus see children working in groups on science experiments or teachers and students working together on a new math concept. In another room, a first grade teacher might be using a "Big Book" to further reading enjoyment for those beginning readers. Our preschool curriculum is developmentally appropriate for early learners. Joy in learning is our priority at this age. Our program includes activities which introduce basic math and reading concepts.
In addition to traditional subjects such as reading, language arts, math, science and social studies, our curriculum includes art, music, physical education, religion, foreign language and computer literacy. Computers are in all classrooms.
We hope the most important thing observed is the spirit of cooperation between teachers and students. Our outstanding teachers are carefully selected for their ability to nurture and encourage children. At St. Luke's every child has the opportunity to develop a special talent or skill.
In addition to religion classes, children attend weekly church services. Students participate in the handbell choir and serve as acolytes.
St. Luke's is a school of many different children. We welcome all children regardless of race, creed, national origin, or, when possible, economic status. St. Luke's Episcopal Day School is an outreach minstry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, under the pastoral direction of the Rector.
Some of our students' most memorable experiences take place outside the classroom. Popular field trip destinations include the Rural Homestead, the Louisiana Arts and Sciences Museum and the Gulf Coast Research Center in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The opportunity for Christian service begins early at St. Luke's Episcopal Day School. Students develop a strong commitment to the community through their volunteer experiences. Each year our students sponsor Jump Rope for Heart, provide gifts for needy children at Christmas, and donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Muscular Distrophy, and United Cerebal Palsy. At our weekly chapel services, children bring food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Also, boys and girls develop lasting friendships in the after-school scouting programs.
When children first visit our campus, their immediate reaction is, "Wow, awesome playground!" We recognize that children are, first and foremost, children, and need a safe, fun place to play. Our entire school is cheerful and appealing to children, from our well-stocked library to our state-of-the-art computer lab.
We offer an enriching extended care program for children of working parents. It is a more relaxed, leisurely time after school, but includes a study hall for older children. Most children are able to complete homework assignments then, which allows for more family time at home in the evening. |
