Welcome to St. Luke's Episcopal Day School

Amy Whitley, Head of School

Welcome to St. Luke’s Episcopal Day School. As head of school of St. Luke’s, I have the pleasure of working with 365 students, more than 50 talented faculty and staff, and hundreds of involved parents. We enjoy the opportunity of working with children from Pre-K through eighth grade in a neighborhood school environment. In spite of the changes that have taken place since its establishment in 1957, St. Luke’s maintains many of the defining characteristics that made it the school of choice for many Baton Rouge families fifty years ago. Our school operates very much like a loving family. A policy of small class size allows us to know our students and their families. Together we share a very clear vision of a school that teaches values that never change.

There is a terrific spirit that you feel when you step onto the campus. It is immediately evident to visitors that they are seeing a faculty that enjoys teaching, parents who are involved educational partners, and most of all, children who are happy, active learners. St. Luke’s combines the ideal balance of a progressive and challenging curriculum, along with a nurturing environment that allows children to demonstrate their personal best. Visitors touring the campus are likely to see students involved in a wide variety of grade appropriate activities. On a typical day you might see students: dissecting owl pellets or sharks in our outdoor classroom, serving as acolytes in weekly church services, using manipulatives for a hands-on math lesson, researching topics on the Internet, playing instruments in the music room, learning conversational Spanish, creating original works of pottery, reading quality literature, writing and editing creative works, or playing a team sport in physical education. In addition to class-based activities, teachers supplement instruction with many meaningful field trips and guest speakers. We also see the lasting benefits of pairing our younger students with upper grade students in our Buddy Program, and encourage participation in several service-oriented projects each year. Our curriculum prepares students for the academic expectations of future grades, while addressing the whole child.

I hope that you will take time to schedule a tour so that you can experience the many unique qualities of St. Luke’s Episcopal Day School. We look forward to seeing you.
